John, I disagree.
No one deny the importance of harmonics and you are right saying that “If a speaker does not reproduce the harmonics correctly, then the tone is not reproduced correctly.” However you are talking about a complete speaker, not...

hi Jd*
probably u know the site of volvotreter, with quit a nice description how to built a wood tractrix horn.

i want to built a tractrix horn with 95cm diameter hornmouth. Have u made such a horn ...
A few years ago we discovered the tractrix horn for MF use. It was really the most important improvement so far. No more honking exponential horn sound. The improvement was so clear that A/B testing was not needed.
OK, it took for a while but at this point I have nailed down all design aspects of the new 6-channels Super Milq, and particularly its input stage. I have listen and evaluated all solutions that will be implemented in there; selected, appraised and o...

KOTriode, …no one questions the usefulness of having a regulator and the ability to adjust voltage and current independently. However, it is necessary ONLY during a design phase and sine you have figure out the optimum operation point for a given tub...

Looking again at the EdgarHorns, the placement in the room seems nearly optimal and they are now properly time aligned. Looking at the phase of the individual drivers and listening to each of them individually revealed that the tweeter was wire...

Robin, what you say about shifting your head while listening is very interesting in the context of this thread, since I happen to know that one of Haralnov's primary goals is the elimination of the tweeter (or any driver, for that matter) as a "sour...

Actually (probably because of the phase coherence and tight dispersion control) they sound very good even with some basic equipments, like the small 300 USD Parasound zAmp for example, but I like them most with the pro MC2 Audio MC1250 amps or the Fr...

Unicon, when you lose the 6 screws on same driver equally and sound changes then what exactly you feel is changing in sound. I do not mind you reporting that sound change but I still not at ease that you associate the change with phase. I do not thin...

Unicon, the RESONANCE that you deal while you tightening to loosening screws does not deals with TIME . Perhaps it is the semantics that you feel comfortable but still I would live mass resonance to mass domain and would not confuse it.

When listening to stereo, we initially have 4 images to deal with. Th right speaker to the right ear, the right speaker to the left ear, the left speaker to the right ear and the left speaker to the left ear. Broader images can be made when we “cance...

Ok, how to start. First of all we have to understand that out subject of attention will be a region between approximately 80Hz and 500Hz or something that shape the fundamentals of the “melody range” within your playback. Search my site I have writte...

I bet Yamamura is using non-causal filtering... this is all running off a music server, so could process everything offline. This makes it possible to do forward-backward filtering - you run the filtered signal "backwards" through the original filter...

kodomo, there is a thing that you need to understand. The
objective to have bass channels outside is valid but it is applied to a perfect
condition when you have unlimited width. In the situation like you’re the objective to
have bass channels ou...

Hello,This is my first post to this site, which I have been absorbing for over a year.A horn project that I have been considering would include either a 1 inch or 1.5 inch throat compression driver into a Tractrix profile horn of which I have not yet...

Ok, I did try the 4th order filter and it did not sound as I wanted. The 3rd order is right slope foe my room but I need to go for custom filters separately dedicated for right and left channels. The problem is my right channel with the att...
I've been listening for about one week now with the filters set so the hand off from lower-mid to upper-mid happens higher up (upper-mid S2 is high-passed at 4800Hz instead of 3200Hz), meaning the small 400Hz horn is doing...

I hope this is on-topic.I want to understand more about effect of phase on audio. There is a product, ZVOX, which is alternative to 5.1 surround for home movies. It is stereo system, but it has phase settings (which you can adjust) that make soundstag...

Not Amplitude. It's the rock solid phase linearity. It feels like a brick wall all the way up and down. I haven't looked at any graphs and haven't measured anything but that is my guess. There is no question of the great tone of vintage Tannoy but al...

I do not completely agree with everything that Dave imply in this article but all-together it is a very good article. The phase by logging graph is particularly interesting and I did not seen it was published anywhere.

Of course, any speaker is a compromise rather than a "solution" for the complex problems of "phase", which can hardly be "solved" by fixing driver diaphragms in the same verticle plane, at least relative to the listener. Not to say that this is not w...

Romy-In this thread, you previously said--12) If a
filter requires a phase inversion then it is preferable to flood
crossover point with amplitude and do not invert phase. What exactly do you mean by this and how's it work?thanks-d....

Adrian .I think we are right about tightening and loosening where the drivers mount on battle . I was wondering how it comes that none of HI end industry folks ever care about this issue,(consider hearing the hi-end top model speaker costing ur ass r...

Hello Angelo,
Even though it may not be a good idea to use a phase plug in a straight Upper Bass horn, I did find the information educational, and just wanted to thank you for the link. Thanks also to Romy for his comments on the subject.

One advantage of the use of a phase plug in a midbass horn is that it will beam less at higher frequenzies than a horn without phase plug. If the phase plug is designed for the specific horn and driver it will help "steer" the HF.

Dear Romy,
well the horns are actually not designed for HF. The intended working range is up to 5-700. But since we use low Q, only second order filters we want to have a rather large overlap in the crossover region and a fairly even pattern over ...
|
Well, it was not really a surprise to us that the horn without the phase plug was dissapointing. Without the plug we had a horn that was a bit too short, had too large front cavity and less compression than we desired.
